Budget Sunderland Break: Cheap Hotels, Free Things to Do & Travel Guide
Looking for a fun and affordable UK getaway that won’t drain your wallet? I’ve just got back from Sunderland and, although I have to say it would never be the first place I’d think of for a night away, I actually had a really lovely time. It is a nice city, the people are friendly and food and drink were cheap, so what’s not to love?! Sunderland might not be the first place that comes to mind, but that’s exactly why it’s such a hidden gem. With beautiful coastline, free attractions, and plenty of low-cost food and drink options (we found £2 pints!), a cheap night away in Sunderland is surprisingly easy to pull off.
Why Choose Sunderland for a Budget Break?
Sunderland offers a great mix of seaside charm, culture, and nightlife, without the high prices you’d find in bigger cities like Newcastle (I used to live in Newcastle and love it so will write a separate post soon). Accommodation is generally cheaper, many attractions are free and you can still enjoy a proper night out without overspending.
It’s ideal for couples looking for a low-cost escape, friends planning a spontaneous night out and solo travellers wanting a relaxed coastal vibe which is perfect if you’re looking for a quick north-east break in a campervan or motorhome! Here’s how to do it right, where we visited, plus a list of the best budget-friendly things to do.
Cheap Places to Stay in Sunderland
You don’t need luxury to enjoy your stay, and Sunderland has plenty of affordable options. Here’s our three picks:
Holiday Inn Sunderland
I’ll start with The Holiday Inn Sunderland, as that’s where we stayed. I’d say it’s mid-end price range and often available for well under £100 with breakfast included. The location was great, as was just on the edge of the city centre and is a reliable and budget-friendly stay. It offers modern, comfortable rooms with everything you need for a short break, including air conditioning, private bathrooms and workspace areas.
The on-site restaurant serves a range of meals throughout the day, with options to suit different diets, and there’s also a bar and fitness centre if you want a bit extra during your stay. Free WiFi is available, making it easy to plan your trip or unwind in the evening. Location-wise, it’s well placed for exploring and is within easy reach of the Stadium of Light, the seafront and the city centre, so you won’t need to spend much on transport. Parking-wise, we parked at Riverside (a short walk), which was £7 per day.

Hilton Garden Inn Sunderland
Second choice for us, if you are visiting The Stadium of Light for an event, the Hilton Garden Inn Sunderland is a solid option and often under £100. Located right next to the stadium, it’s around a 15-minute walk into the city centre and just a short drive from Roker and Seaburn beaches.
Rooms are modern and well-equipped, with en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee facilities, and TVs, some even feature large floor-to-ceiling windows. Free WiFi is included, and there’s also a 24-hour fitness centre if you want to stay active during your trip.
The on-site Karbon Grill restaurant serves a range of American-style dishes, including burgers, steaks, and sharing platters, while breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available daily. There’s also a small shop on-site for snacks, drinks and quick meal options. Parking is available at a low daily rate, making it convenient if you’re travelling by car.
Overall, it’s a great mid-range option that balances comfort, location, and value which is ideal if you want something a step up from basic budget hotels without overspending.

The Lemonfield Hotel
Staying slightly outside the city centre (e.g., near Seaburn or Roker) can save money and give you a coastal setting, so we’re showing you another highly rated hotel, The Lemonfield Hotel, as it’s right on the beach.

Rooms are comfortable and well-equipped, featuring private bathrooms, toiletries, bathrobes, and modern touches like streaming services, work desks, and electric kettles. Many rooms also enjoy sea views, making it a relaxing place to unwind after a day of exploring.
Breakfast is served daily, with a full English or Irish option available, along with menus that cater to different dietary needs. Guests can also enjoy outdoor seating areas, perfect for a laid-back morning or evening by the sea. In terms of location, you’re just a short walk from Roker Beach and only a few kilometres from key attractions like the Stadium of Light.
Overall, it’s an ideal choice if you want a peaceful, seaside hotel that combines comfort, views, and easy access to Sunderland’s main attractions.

Campervan & Motorhome Stays in Sunderland
If you’re travelling by campervan or motorhome, Sunderland is a solid budget-friendly option with easy coastal access and a relaxed pace. Staying in a campervan or motorhome lets you wake up right by the coast, making your trip even more memorable without increasing your budget. It’s a flexible, low-cost way to experience Sunderland, especially if you enjoy simple, scenic stays.
- Certified locations (CL sites): Smaller, low-cost spots that are ideal for a quiet overnight stay.
- Seafront parking areas (Roker & Seaburn): Some areas allow overnight stays, but always check local signage and restrictions before settling in.
- Nearby campsites & caravan parks: A safer and more reliable option, often with facilities like electric hook-ups, showers, and toilets.

Mowbray Park
A peaceful green space right in the city, ideal for a picnic or just a wander.

‘One Night in Sunderland’ Itinerary
Arrive in Sunderland mid-afternoon and check into your budget-friendly accommodation before heading straight out to make the most of your time. A walk along Seaburn Beach is a great way to start as it’s simple, free, and a perfect introduction to the coast. As evening rolls in, grab a cheap and cheerful dinner, whether that’s classic fish and chips by the sea or a relaxed pub meal. After that, you can head into the city centre for a few drinks or keep things low-key with a laid-back evening.
The next morning, start your day with breakfast at a local café or take advantage of any included options at your hotel. Before heading home, squeeze in a visit to the Winter Gardens or the National Glass Centre for a bit of culture without the cost. If you have time, a quick walk through Mowbray Park is a nice way to round off the trip before making your way back.
FAQs: Sunderland Travel Tips & Practical Info
Best Time to Visit
Sunderland is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is between late spring and early autumn (May–September). During these months, you’ll get the most out of the coastline, with better weather for beach walks and outdoor activities. Summer brings a livelier atmosphere, while spring and early autumn are ideal if you want fewer crowds and slightly lower prices.
Safety/ Local Tips
Sunderland is generally a safe and friendly city for visitors, especially around the seafront and main attractions. Like anywhere, it’s best to stick to well-lit areas at night and keep an eye on your belongings in busy spots. If you’re heading out for drinks, the city centre is lively but manageable, just plan your route back to your accommodation in advance. Locals are welcoming, so don’t hesitate to ask for directions or recommendations.
Costs/ Budgeting
One of Sunderland’s biggest advantages is how affordable it is compared to other UK destinations. Accommodation can be found from around £40–£70 per night (see our suggestions above), while food and drinks are reasonably priced, with meals often costing £10–£15 per person. Many of the top attractions are free, which helps keep overall costs low. For a cheap night away, most people can expect to spend around £70–£125 per person in total, depending on how much you plan to eat, drink and do.
